5.1.6.2.2 Final scenario 2: Aggregate extraction

Navigation Arrows Previous Next Previous Next

Assumption

An aggregate extraction site is opened within the North Devon Biosphere Reserve. The footprint is approximately the same as the current extraction site in the Bristol Channel (86 km2). A combination of different aggregates types (fine and coarse sand) is extracted for use in the construction industry.

Changes to existing activities

Demersal trawling would be excluded from the extraction sites and a 1km exclusion zone surrounding them, and displaced into adjacent waters.

Key Drivers

As the UK economy starts to recover, the housing and construction sectors are beginning to grow again. There is a demand for marine sand and gravel.
